MBBS in China Q&AMenu

What degree certificate do I get after MBBS in China?

On completing the teaching plan with passing results, the medical school issues a graduation certificate. Those who meet the Degree Regulations of the People's Republic of China are awarded a Bachelor of Medicine degree (医学学士学位); the English copy may read MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery). These are the rules of the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China for English-taught undergraduate medical education for international students (Article 5 of the 2007 standard).

The Ministry of Education documents cited here are in Chinese; the English wording on this page is this site's translation of the Chinese text. See the course and internship page for the program length and internship rules.

What the certificates are

Article 5 of the Ministry of Education's 2007 Interim Provisions on Quality Control Standards for Undergraduate Medical Education in English for International Students (annex 1 to 教外来〔2007〕39号) sets out the two documents a graduate receives:

Certificate Given by Condition
Graduation certificate the medical school on completing the teaching plan with passing results

The English "MBBS" wording

Article 5 of the 2007 standard states that the English copy of the degree may read MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery). The word "may" is the standard's own wording.

Which schools may issue the English "MBBS" certificate

Paragraph 2 of the Ministry of Education's 2023–2024 list notice (教外厅函〔2023〕10号) states that universities not on the 2023–2024 list may not issue the English-version degree certificate of undergraduate clinical medicine (English-taught) (MBBS), nor an English-version degree certificate containing the word "MBBS". Listed universities must continue to enroll strictly in line with the notice.

This list covers the 2023–2024 academic year. The Ministry's open-government policy index listed no later edition when this site read it on 11 October 2026. Confirm the current year's status with the university and with the Ministry of Education.

Before the certificate: internship and graduation exam

Article 13(3) of the 2007 standard states that the school should organise the graduation internship. The internship lasts one academic year (not less than 48 weeks) and is arranged at the school's teaching hospital or a teaching hospital recognised by the foreign health department. After the internship, the student must take the school's graduation examination.
