What are the entry requirements for MBBS in China?

China's own entry requirements for an English-taught undergraduate medical degree are set out in Article 20 of the 2007 Interim Provisions on Quality Control Standards for Undergraduate Medical Education in English for International Students (annex 1 to 教外来〔2007〕39号), published by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. An applicant shall have senior-secondary graduation or above, good results, good health and strong English ability; a student from a country whose mother tongue is not English must provide proof of English-medium primary and secondary schooling throughout, or an English proficiency test certificate, and must undertake to obey China's constitution and laws and the school's rules during study. Applicant conditions under Article 20

Article 20 of the 2007 Interim Provisions on Quality Control Standards for Undergraduate Medical Education in English for International Students (annex 1 to 教外来〔2007〕39号), published by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China, lists the conditions for an applicant to English-taught undergraduate medical education:

  • senior-secondary graduation or above;
  • good results;
  • good health;
  • strong English language ability;
  • for a student from a country whose mother tongue is not English: proof of English-medium primary and secondary schooling throughout, or an English proficiency test certificate;
  • an undertaking to obey China's constitution and laws and the school's rules during the study period.

Article 20 names no test and no score.

Financial guarantee, guarantor and insurance undertaking

Article 21 of the same 2007 standard requires that an applicant shall have a reliable financial guarantee and a guarantor for affairs in China, and must undertake to buy medical insurance for the study period as the school requires.

Qualification review and the admission documents

Article 22 of the 2007 standard states that admission work shall strictly apply the admission conditions, conduct entry qualification review, examination or assessment of applicants, ensure student quality, and handle the approval procedures as required; the qualified shall be admitted. The school's international student office shall send the admission notice and the JW202 form (Application Form for Visa for Study in China) to the student.

The school's own brochure and admission decision

Article 11 of the Administrative Measures for the Enrolment and Education of International Students by Schools (Order No. 42 of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security, dated 20 March 2017 and in force from 1 July 2017) states that a higher school shall formulate and publish its own international student admission brochure and enrol international students according to the conditions and procedures in that brochure.

Article 12 of Order No. 42 states that a higher school shall review the entry qualification and financial guarantee proof of foreign citizen applicants and conduct examination or assessment. Admission of international students is decided by the school; a school may not enrol those who do not meet the admission conditions.

Article 35 of Order No. 42 of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security (dated 20 March 2017, in force from 1 July 2017) states that a foreigner applying to study at such a school shall, before entry, apply for an X1 or X2 visa according to the study duration, and submit the education-authority-filed certificate and the school's admission notice, among other materials.

Is a medical check required when I enrol?

Article 39 of Order No. 42 of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security (in force from 1 July 2017) states that at enrolment an international student shall complete the confirmation formalities for the Foreign Person Physical Examination Record, or a physical examination, under the Chinese health authority's rules.

Must I purchase insurance at enrolment?

Article 40 of Order No. 42 of the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Security (in force from 1 July 2017) states that schools implement a full-coverage insurance system for international students. An international student must purchase insurance under state regulations and the school's requirements. A student who does not purchase insurance as required shall be ordered to do so within a time limit; if the student still does not, the school shall not admit the student, and a student already studying shall be expelled or not registered.
