What exam do I take at home after MBBS in China?
Unofficial · Sources checked
It depends on your country. Indian graduates take the screening test known as FMGE. Pakistani graduates take the National Registration Examination (NRE). Bangladeshi graduates sit an examination set by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. Nepali graduates take the Nepal Medical Council's licensing examination. In each case the examination is set by your home regulator, and a Chinese degree alone does not register you.
Country by country
| Country | Examination | Run by | What the regulator's document says |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | Screening test (FMGE) | National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, for the National Medical Commission | Pass mark 150 out of 300; result is pass or fail |
| Pakistan | National Registration Examination | Pakistan Medical and Dental Council | Theory and clinical skills components, both mandatory for a full licence; held at least twice a year |
| Bangladesh | Examination set by the Council | Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council | Those who pass are provisionally registered for internship |
| Nepal | Licensing examination | Nepal Medical Council | Held before registration |
India
The National Medical Commission says an Indian citizen or OCI with a primary medical qualification from outside India must qualify a screening test to get provisional or permanent registration. The test is open only if the qualification is recognised for enrolment as a medical practitioner in the country where the institution is. NBEMS conducts the test, and its October 2026 bulletin gives the pass mark as 150 out of 300.
The National Exit Test Regulations 2023 apply NExT to foreign medical graduates. On 13 July 2023 the Commission announced that NExT was deferred until further directions from the Health Ministry. Follow the Commission's current notices for which test applies in your year.
Passing the test is not the last step. The 2021 regulations also require a supervised internship of at least 12 months in India.
Pakistan
PM&DC states that passing both the theory and the clinical skills components of the NRE is mandatory for a full licence to practise. Graduates of recognised foreign institutions may be granted provisional registration first. Two eligibility points come before the examination: PM&DC's notices say only graduates of foreign institutions on the ECFMG lists may sit the NRE, and graduates of institutions PM&DC does not recognise are not given provisional registration.
Bangladesh
The Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act 2010 says a medical degree from outside Bangladesh must be recognised by the Council before it can be used in Bangladesh. If the degree is recognised by the medical council of the country where it was earned, the applicant sits an examination set by the Council, and those who pass are provisionally registered for an internship of a length the Council sets. No one may practise without registration.
This site could not read the BMDC's own website when this page was written, so it describes only what the Act says. Ask the BMDC for the current examination procedure.
Nepal
The Nepal Medical Council conducts a licensing examination before registration, and the Medical Education Commission's MBBS standards note the same. This site could not read the Council's detailed rules for foreign graduates, so it does not describe the format.
Related questions
Does studying at a university on China's list guarantee I can sit the exam?
No. China's list governs who may teach the course. Eligibility for each examination is decided by your home regulator under its own conditions.
Will NExT replace FMGE for Indian graduates?
The 2023 regulations provide for NExT to apply to foreign graduates, and the Commission has deferred it. No date is given in the documents this site has read.
How many times can I attempt the exam?
The documents quoted here do not state an attempt limit for any of the four examinations. Check the current bulletin or notice of your regulator.
