MBBS in China Q&AMenu

Is NEET required to study MBBS in China?

Yes, if you are an Indian citizen or an Overseas Citizen of India. India's National Medical Commission (NMC) says anyone who goes abroad for a primary medical qualification on or after May 2018 must qualify NEET. The rule comes from India, not from China: Chinese universities set their own entry conditions, and NEET is what lets you register as a doctor in India afterwards.

What the NMC says

The NMC's information page for students going abroad states the rule in these words:

Indian Citizens/Overseas Citizen of India intending to obtain primary medical qualification from any medical institution outside India, on or after May 2018, shall have to mandatorily qualify the 'National-Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Admission to MBBS course'.

It also says how long a result lasts. The NEET result is valid for three years from the date it is declared, and within that time it entitles a candidate to pursue an MBBS or equivalent course abroad, including a pre-medical or language course that comes before it.

What happens without it

A public notice of 4 September 2020 on the NEET requirement says that not qualifying NEET makes a student ineligible to appear in the screening test, and so not entitled to provisional or permanent registration. The screening test is the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, which Indian citizens with a foreign medical degree must qualify to be registered in India.

NEET is one of several Indian conditions

NEET gets you to the starting line. The NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 add conditions about the course itself:

Condition in the 2021 regulations Where
A course of at least 54 months Regulation 4(a)(i)
A 12-month internship in the same foreign medical institution Regulation 4(a)(ii)
English as the medium of instruction Regulation 4(a)(iii)
Registered with, or eligible for a licence from, the regulator of the country where the degree is awarded Regulation 4(b)
A supervised internship of at least 12 months in India Regulation 4(c)
Clearing the National Exit Test or other test the Commission mandates Regulation 4(d)

What China asks for at entry

China's standard for English-taught undergraduate medical education asks for at least senior-secondary graduation, good grades, good health and strong English. Students whose mother tongue is not English must show English-medium schooling or an English test result. It does not mention NEET. A Chinese university may admit you without it; the Indian rule still applies to you.

Related questions

Does qualifying NEET mean a rank or a seat in India?

The NMC's wording is "qualify". It does not ask for a particular rank for study abroad.

I qualified NEET two years ago. Can I still go?

The result is valid for three years from the date it was declared, for the purpose of starting a medical course abroad.

Does the NMC approve particular universities in China?

No. The NMC states that it does not endorse any list of foreign medical institutions or universities. China's Ministry of Education publishes its own list of universities allowed to teach medicine in English to international students: see the list.

Is NEET required for students from Pakistan, Bangladesh or Nepal?

No. NEET is India's test. Each of those countries has its own rule: see NEET and eligibility.

Check the regulator's current document before you act. Medical councils issue new notices often, and a notice can change who may sit an examination. This page reflects the documents as they stood on the date above. It does not promise registration or a licence.
