What is the FMGE pass mark?

The FMGE pass mark is a minimum of 150 marks out of 300. This is India's rule, set by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) for Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India who hold a primary medical qualification from a medical institution outside India and wish to register with the Medical Council of India or a State Medical Council. For the October 2026 session, chapter 5 and chapter 10 of the FMGE (Screening Test) October 2026 Information Bulletin, version 2.2, state this pass mark; each session has its own bulletin.

The pass mark

Chapter 5 of the FMGE (Screening Test) October 2026 Information Bulletin, version 2.2, published by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), India, states that a candidate shall be declared as having passed only if he or she obtains a minimum of 150 marks out of 300 in the examination. Chapter 10 of the same bulletin repeats the same pass mark and states that the result is declared as Pass / Fail.

These are the terms of the October 2026 session. Each session of the FMGE has its own information bulletin, and the numbers above apply only to that bulletin.

This site's section page on licensing exams covers the examination and registration steps in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal.

How the paper is set out

Chapter 5 of the October 2026 bulletin describes the examination as one paper of 300 multiple-choice questions, delivered in two parts on a single day, each part comprising 150 questions. Each question has four response options in English. There shall be no negative marking. Marks obtained by a candidate in Part I and Part II shall not be published. Chapter 5 states there is no provision for re-totalling, re-evaluation, or the award of grace marks in FMGE.

Result and pass certificate

Chapter 10 of the October 2026 bulletin states the result of a candidate may be kept withheld for reasons informed to the candidate by NBEMS. Qualified candidates shall be issued pass certificates after in-person document and identity verification, tentatively within four weeks of declaration of results; due to unforeseen circumstances this period may vary.
