MBBS in China Q&AMenu

Is MBBS in China a good option for Indian students?

This site does not answer whether MBBS in China is a "good" or "bad" option for an Indian student. It gives the checks that the National Medical Commission (India)'s own documents let a family run on any offer before paying. These checks come from the Commission's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 and its study-abroad advisories, and they apply to Indian students.

For what each home regulator requires before departure, see NEET and eligibility.

Under regulation 5, the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 do not apply to foreign medical graduates who acquired a foreign medical degree before 18 November 2021, or to candidates already pursuing education in a foreign institution before that date (per Q2 and Q4 of the Commission's FAQ); those students are governed by the earlier regulations.

Checks to run on any offer

  1. NEET qualification. The National Medical Commission (India)'s Information Desk page, eligibility criteria item (3), states that Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India intending to obtain a primary medical qualification from any medical institution outside India, on or after May 2018, shall mandatorily qualify the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to MBBS. The NEET result is valid for three years from the date of declaration of the result (Information Desk page, National Medical Commission, India).

  2. The university is on China's 2023–2024 English-taught MBBS list. The Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China (General Office) published the list for the 2023–2024 academic year (教外厅函〔2023〕10号), entrusting 44 higher education institutions to enroll international students in English-taught undergraduate clinical medicine, with 3,048 places in total (paragraph 1 of the notice). Universities not on the list may not enroll English-taught undergraduate clinical medicine international students or issue an MBBS English-degree certificate (paragraph 2 of the notice). The English here is this site's translation of the Chinese text. The Ministry's policy index listed no later edition when this site read it on 11 October 2026; confirm the current year's status with the university and the Ministry.

  3. Fifty-four months of study and a twelve-month internship in the same institution. Regulation 4(a)(i) requires a course leading to a foreign medical degree with a minimum duration of fifty-four months. Regulation 4(a)(ii) requires an internship for a minimum duration of twelve months in the same foreign medical institution (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, National Medical Commission, India).

  4. English medium of instruction. Regulation 4(a)(iii) requires a foreign medical degree with medium of instructions in English (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021).

  5. Mandatory subjects. Regulation 4(a)(iv) requires the mandatory subjects specified in Schedule I. Schedule I, paragraph 2(i)(b) names subjects including Community Medicine, General Medicine, Psychiatry, Paediatrics, General Surgery, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Emergency or Casualty services, lab services and their sub-specialties (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, Schedule I).

  6. Registration in the country of study, on par with citizens. Regulation 4(b) requires registration with the respective professional regulatory body competent to grant a licence to practise medicine in the jurisdiction of the country in which the degree is awarded, and at par with the licence given to citizens of that country (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021).

  7. Supervised internship in India. Regulation 4(c) requires a supervised internship in India for a minimum term of twelve months, after applying for the same to the Commission (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021).

  8. The licensing test in India. Regulation 4(d) requires clearing the National Exit Test or such other mandated test or tests conducted by the Commission (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021).

  9. Completion within ten years. Schedule I, paragraph 2(iv) states the total duration of the foreign medical graduation course shall be completed within ten years from the date of joining the course (Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, Schedule I).

  10. Verify before you pay. Advisory U-14021/UGMEB-2025 of 19 May 2025, section 6(b), advises confirming approvals before making any payments or committing to a program (National Medical Commission, India, Undergraduate Medical Education Board).

Who bears the consequence

Advisory U-14021/UGMEB-2025 of 19 May 2025, section 4 (Risk of disqualification), states that students graduating from non-compliant institutions will be held ineligible for licensing exams (FMGE) in India, and the onus of this disqualification lies solely with the student, as per the Commission's regulations.

Alert Note No. U-15021/1/2024-UGMEB of July 2025, paragraph 5, advises that students governed by the FMGL Regulations 2021 who study in non-compliant institutes may face disqualification from registration in India due to non-compliance, and that they need to evaluate whether their current university meets the FMGL Regulations 2021.
